VAWG & Cultural Harmful Practices

  • VAWG & Cultural Harmful Practices

Protecting Dignity. Empowering Communities. Saving Lives.

Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) is the umbrella term used to describe a range of violent and abusive acts and behaviours, which are predominantly, but not exclusively, directed against women and girls.

This term is used to describe abuse against all genders but highlights the disproportionate impact on women and girls.

Use our guides to find out more about VAWG and how to get involved with Ayda Community.

What Are Harmful Cultural Practices?

Harmful cultural practices are traditions or customs that negatively affect the physical, emotional, or social well-being of individuals, especially women and children.

These practices may include:

  • Child and forced marriage

  • Female genital mutilation (FGM)

  • Harmful widowhood practices

  • Gender-based discrimination and violence

  • Practices that deny education or health care

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.

Sign up for our VAWG & Cultural harmful practices Awareness and Empowerment workshops.

The support forum aims to empower women/girls who are survivors/at risk of harmful cultural practices including VAWG & FGM onto a more sustainable footing.
